Commander’s Column – By Nick Posey

Our task of finding the funds necessary to have the restoration work done on the Confederate Powder Works chimney is in the hands of our Georgia legislators at this point in time. Getting this funding in the near future is largely contingent upon the actions of the Georgia State Legislature and their decisions on the budget for this fiscal year. We have our legislators in the Richmond County and Columbia County delegations, and also Mayor Deke Copenhaver, working to obtain funding for the chimney restoration.

Five camp members and myself met with the mayor on Friday, March 16, and the primary issue discussed was the poor condition of the Powder Works chimney and the restoration work that desperately needs to be done to refurbish it. The mayor is one hundred percent in agreement with us that the chimney needs to be restored and preserved. He understands that the chimney is a unique and rare historic structure, and an important Augusta landmark that should be saved. An update on the chimney will be given at the next meeting.

I would for you to make plans to attend our Confederate Memorial Day Service at Magnolia Cemetery on Saturday, April 28th. Bring family members and invite friends to attend this once a year service to honor our Confederate ancestors and the over 900 Confederate soldiers and veterans buried in Magnolia Cemetery.

Our meeting is this Thursday night and our program speaker will be Don Gordon, Past Commander of the Lt. General Wade Hampton Camp #273 in Columbia. A lot of you have heard Don speak before, and he’s an excellent and entertaining speaker. He will speak on "Wade Hampton’s Cavalry." Come this Thursday night and bring a guest (future member) for an enjoyable evening good barbecue and Southern fellowship!

Inspirational Words

~ GOD`S MOST AMAZING GRACE ~

If there had been another way,

Do you think He would have died?

No other man could take his place,

Not even if one tried.

God did not ask for volunteers,

But even if He had,

Would you have said?

"Take me instead"

People would have thought you were mad.

None of us were good enough to take His place upon that cross.

None of us were rich enough to have paid that high a cost.

It’s hard to believe a loving GOD would sacrifice His Son.

But, it had to be that way, you see,

He was the only One.

He took our sin along with him,

As directed from above,

None of us were so generous,

We could offer that much love.

He said He would leave the tomb,

He would ascend to heaven,

Three days later He was gone.

Mark 16: 2-6

[1] And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. [2] And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. [3] And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? [4] And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. [5] And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. [6] And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
