Commander’s Column – By Nick Posey

On Saturday, January 13th, we’ll be having our Lee-Jackson Banquet to celebrate the lives and honor two great Southern soldiers and Christian gentlemen – Generals Robert E. Lee & Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. This year is the bicentennial of Robert E. Lee’s birthday. I’m encouraging all camp members to attend this important annual event. The cost of attending the banquet is very reasonable and the entertainment will be first-rate. (See banquet announcement on page 5.) The deadline for reserving tickets is this Thursday, January 11th, at our meeting.

Our program speaker will be Dr. John Chandler Griffin from Lancaster SC. He’ll give a slide presentation and speak on his book, "A Pictorial History of the Confederacy." Invite a friend or family member and bring them to the meeting at Sconyers on Thursday night. I look forward to seeing you there.

Camp #158 welcomes two recently transferred members:

■ Curtis Carter, a former member of Major General Ambrose Ransom Wright Camp #1914 in Evans, Georgia.

■ Arnold Huskins, a former member of Alamo Camp #1325 in San Antonio, Texas.

Scripture for thought…

Deuteronomy 6

[5] And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
[6] And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
[7] And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Revelation 12

[10] And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
[11] And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Quotes by Lee & Jackson…

"All that the South has ever desired was that the Union, as established by our forefathers, should be preserved; and that the government, as originally organized, should be administered in purity and truth." – Statement by Robert E. Lee in January 1866

"I must abide the fortunes and share the fate of my people." – Robert E. Lee’s response to an English nobleman who had offered him a home, a position, and a handsome stipend if he would but move to England.

Meeting Minutes for December 14th, 2006

Brigadier General E. Porter Alexander Camp #158

Sons of Confederate Veterans

Sconyers Bar-B-Que Restaurant - Augusta, Georgia

Camp Commander Nick Posey called the monthly meeting of Brigadier General E. Porter Alexander Camp #158 to order at 7:00 PM. Chaplain Tony Carr gave the invocation and led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag. Commander Posey then led the Pledge of Allegiance to the "Real" Georgia State Flag, the salute to the Confederate Flag, and the salute to the Christian Flag. He then read the "SCV Charge."

Commander Posey introduced twenty-seven guests in attendance. These included: SCV Commander-in-Chief Christopher M. Sullivan, our 5th Brigade Commander, Michael Mull, of Ogeechee Rifles Camp #941 in Statesboro, Georgia, and representatives from several UDC Chapters and SCV Camps, and family members of these organizations and our camp.

The meeting minutes for the October and November meetings were approved as published in the November and December Wigwags.

Confederate History Minute

Phil Turner, "The Gray Poet," read selections from 1956 and 1957 issues of the UDC Magazine. He then presented CIC Sullivan with a framed copy of a poem. Along with the poem was a picture of the Confederate Battle Flag when it flew above the dome on the South Carolina statehouse in Columbia.

Program Speaker

Commander Posey introduced the speaker for the evening, Commander-in-Chief Christopher M. Sullivan, who joined Camp #36, The 16th Regiment SC, of the SCV in 1982 at the urging of two elderly sisters from Greenville.

CIC Sullivan provided a poignant and inspirational talk on the meaning and mission of the SCV. His discussion started by quoting Winston Churchill who stated after WWII, "The hope of the world is the West, and the hope of the West is America." Sullivan then added, "The hope of the United States is the South, and the hope of the South is the SCV." His message to the camp then encouraged recruiting and retention of members, and protecting our heritage through preservation, memorial activities, and education. He demonstrated that over 90% of SCV members were invited to join by friends and family, and emphasized that new members must be made to feel welcome. (As a new SCV member he was fined at his first camp meeting for saying "Civil War.") CIC Sullivan stated "we are experiencing the most severe attack on the South since the War Between the States and Reconstruction, but we are better equipped today to defend our heritage than ever before." Educating ourselves and the public is the key to success.

Commander Posey thanked Commander-in-Chief Christopher M. Sullivan and presented him with a framed photograph of the Confederate Powder Works Chimney, taken at its 140th Anniversary in 2002.

Presentation of SCV Membership Certificates

Commander Posey and Adjutant Perry Herron administered the SCV membership pledge and presented membership certificates to six new members – Mark Gay, Orie Malin, Joe Poteet, Keith Walker, Marty Weaver and Barry Whitney.

A special Memorial Membership for infant Samuel Lucas Weaver was presented to his father, Luke Weaver, from the Camp.
