Commander’s Column – By Nick Posey

It has turned out to be another busy month for the camp. On Saturday, May 12th, we hosted a grave marker dedication/memorial service at the Bugg Family Cemetery in Grovetown for three Confederate ancestors of Army of Tennessee Commander Kelly Barrow. We set up a couple of booths at the Barnyard Flea market on Saturday, May 26th, to sell camp merchandise and give living history presentations. We had a Magnolia Cemetery Workday on Saturday, June 2nd. And Camp #158 delegates attended the 110th Georgia Division Reunion in Metter on Saturday, June 9th. I’ll give an update on the Reunion at the next meeting.

Our program speaker for this month will be Dr. John Chandler Griffin, Southern author and historian. He’ll be speaking about and giving a slide presentation on "Lt. Bill Farrow: Doolittle Raider." This is going to be something a little different this month. Lieutenant Doolittle, a native of Darlington, SC, was a fighter pilot during World War II. He participated in the bombing of Tokyo in April 1942, and was later shot down, captured and executed by the Japanese. Dr. Griffin has given this talk to other SCV camps and it was well received. He’s an excellent speaker, as a lot of you know, and this should a very interesting and inspiring story about a brave Southern fighter pilot who gave his life for his country. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at Sconyers this Thursday night.

Camp #158 welcomes its first Cadet Member, James Lee Martin, accepted for membership at the May 10th meeting. He was eligible for membership through his Confederate ancestor 1st Sergeant W.J. Rust who served in Company F, 47th Tennessee Infantry.

I only regret that we did not defer the evil day or prepare longer, better maintaining our independence. (Statement made by Jefferson Davis during his confinement at Fortress Monroe in 1865)

Reports of Officers

Lt. Commander Ron Udell reminded everyone about the camp’s participation in the upcoming monument dedication service in Grovetown on Monday, May 28th at 1:00 p.m. He also commented that Camp #158 was very well represented with re-enactors on Saturday, April 14th, at the 6th National Confederate Memorial Service at Stone Mountain Park. Almost half of the infantry soldiers that participated in the black powder salute were from our camp.

Treasurer Henry Gilmer provided the Camp Finance Report for the month of April.

Quartermaster Ben Creech reported that he made two trips, one on April 4th and another on April 18th, to Ruffin Flag Company in Washington, Georgia, to purchase merchandise for the camp store. The amount spent for merchandise was $100.00 on April 4th, and $207.50 on April 18th. A total of $413.00 worth of camp merchandise was sold. The amount $413.00 was turned over to Treasurer Henry Gilmer, leaving $68.00 remaining in the Quartermaster’s cash box.

Commander Nick Posey

■ Thanked everyone again for their dedication and hard work in preparing for our Confederate Memorial Day Service on Saturday, April 28th.

■ Reminded the membership about the upcoming Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 28th, at the All Wars Monument at 11:00 a.m. The All Wars monument is located at 4th & Broad Streets in Augusta.

■ Announced that eleven delegates from the camp are needed to attend the Georgia Division SCV Reunion in Metter on Saturday, June 9th.

■ Saturday, June 2nd, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. will be a Magnolia Cemetery Workday.

■ Reported that there is not much news from the Georgia State Legislature on funding for the Powder Works chimney; in my last conversation with Mayor Deke Copenhaver a few days ago, he stated that he would work with us to obtain the funding; State Representative Barbara Sims told me this week that funding from the state wouldn’t be available until FY ’08, which begins on July 1st.

New Business –

A motion was made, seconded and passed to donate $60.00 to the 32nd Georgia Artillery to help defray the cost of gunpowder for the cannons used at our Confederate Memorial Day Service on Saturday, April 28th.

■ A second motion was made, seconded and passed to authorize the Camp’s Quartermaster to pay up to $40.00 for booth fee rentals at various festivals and the Barnyard Flea Market.

■ A third motion was made, seconded and passed directing the camp’s delegates that attend the Georgia Division SCV 110th Reunion in Metter on Saturday, June 9th, to vote against the Napier-Hoffman House proposed lease agreement. The membership feels that this lease agreement, if accepted by the Georgia Division, would legally and contractually bind the Division to a financial obligation that would place a tremendous economic strain on the Division. The camp members agreed that it is in the best interest of the Georgia Division and all camps in the Division not to subject our Division and its members to such a burdensome financial agreement.

The monthly prize drawing was conducted by Treasurer Henry Gilmer to provide a monthly donation to the Southern Legal Resource Center, funding for our Lee-Jackson Banquet Fund and the camp’s general fund.

The drawing was held for the General Patrick Cleburne mini-bust. Camp member Carl Mixon was the proud winner.

Adjournment - There being no further business and no objection to adjourn, it was so declared by general consent by Commander Posey and the meeting was adjourned. Lieutenant Commander Ron Udell gave the Benediction, followed by our usual resounding rendition of Dixie.

Respectfully submitted,

Commander Nick Posey
