Meeting Minutes for March 9th, 2006

Brigadier General E. Porter Alexander Camp #158

Sons of Confederate Veterans

Sconyers Bar-B-Que Restaurant - Augusta, Georgia

Camp Commander Nick Posey called the monthly meeting of Brigadier General E. Porter Alexander Camp #158 to order at 7:00 PM. Chaplain Tony Carr gave the invocation and led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag. Commander Posey then led the Pledge of Allegiance to the "Real" Georgia State Flag and the salute to the Confederate Flag; he then read the "SCV Charge."

Commander Posey introduced eighteen guests in attendance. These included: our 5th Brigade Commander, Michael Mull of the Ogeechee Rifles Camp #941, Statesboro, Georgia, and representatives from the Berry Benson Chapter 2584 of the UDC from North Augusta; Maj. Gen. Ambrose Ransom Wright Camp #1914 of Evans; Wilson Tigers - Company I 48th GA Camp #245 of Hephzibah; Sergeant Berry Benson Camp #1672 of North Augusta; and Major Morgan/Hart's Battery Camp #1674, Springfield, SC. Also in attendance were representatives of the 5th Georgia Infantry Regiment Re-enactors.

There being no additions or corrections, the meeting minutes of the February meeting were approved as published in the March Wigwag.

Commander Nick Posey presented the Confederate History Moment. Nick spoke about "Rockets in the Confederacy." General Winfield Scott's forces launched rockets in the Mexican War, the first such use by Americans. The first recorded use of rockets in the War Between the States came in 1862, when Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's Confederate cavalry fired rockets at Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's Union troops at Harrison's Landing, Va. The only successful use of rockets was at Charleston, S.C. in 1864. Union troops used rockets at night to drive off Confederate picket boats. One myth is that the Confederates launched a rocket from Richmond in an attempt to target Lincoln's White House over 100 miles distance.

Program Speaker

Commander Posey introduced Captain David Shockey of the 5th Georgia Infantry Regiment Re-enactors, the evening's guest speaker. Captain Shockey presented the history of the "Clinch Rifles," Company A of the 5th Georgia. The unit began in Augusta as a militia company in 1851 and was more a social club than a military unit. It boasted the slogan, "Charge Again!" Wearing green uniforms, the men had fun and games for their first 9 years. Then in 1861 the unit made of whites and free blacks was called upon to occupy the Augusta Arsenal. It was mustered into Confederate service May 11, 1861 as Company A of the 5th Georgia and sent to Florida. There, on October 9th, the "Clinch Rifles" had their first taste of battle at Santa Rosa Island. In 1862 the "Clinch Rifles" were in Tennessee and Mississippi, where they saw limited action at Shiloh. Traveling through Kentucky, Alabama, and Tennessee, it was not until Murfreesborough that they engaged in their second battle. At Chickamauga, the company suffered 55% casualties. After Lookout Mountain, they were made part of Walker's Division. From Resaca, the unit was sent to Charleston where it served on prison duty. It fought at Broxton Bridge and then at Bentonville in NC where it made its last charge before surrendering on 26 April 1865.

Commander Posey thanked Captain Shockey and presented him with a framed photograph of the Confederate Powder Works Chimney taken at its 140th anniversary in April 2002.
