CONFEDERATE GENERALS BURIED IN MAGNOLIA


EDWARD PORTER ALEXANDER 
Born in Washington, Ga., May 26, 1835.
Third in Class of 1857 at West Point.
One of only three Confederate officers to hold the rank of Brigadier
General in the artillery.
Battles:  First Manassas, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania,
Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.
Died:  Savannah, Ga., April 28, 1910.



GOODE BRYAN
Born in Hancock County, Ga., August 31, 1811.
Graduated West Point in 1834.
Brigadier General.
Battles:  Seven Days Campaign, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville,
Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Knoxville, and Wilderness.
Died:  Augusta, Ga., August 16, 1885.



VICTOR JEAN BAPTISTE GIRARDEY
Born in Lauw, France, June 23, 1837.
Emigrated at age five with his parents to settle in Augusta.
Brigadier General.
For his brilliant performance  at the Battle of the Crater, he was
promoted from Captain to Brigadier General, the only instance of 
such an advancement in the army during the war.
Died:  killed in action seventeen days after his promotion, at
Fussell's Mill, August 16, 1864.



JOHN KING JACKSON
Born in Augusta, Ga., Feburary 8, 1828.
Brigadier General.
Battles:  Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Atlanta Campaign.
Died:  Milledgeville, Ga., Feburary 27, 1866.



WILLIAM DUNCAN SMITH
Born in Augusta, Ga., July 28, 1825.
Graduated West Point in 1846.
Brigadier General.
Battle:  Secessionville.
Died:  Charleston, SC., of yellow fever, October 4, 1862.



MARCELLUS AUGUSTUS STOVALL
Born in Sparta, Ga., September 18, 1818.
Brigadier General.
At age 17 became the youngest member of the Richmond Blues,
serving in the Seminole uprising in Florida in 1836.
Battles:  Stone's River, Atlanta Campaign (esp. Battle of Atlanta).



AMBROSE RANSOM WRIGHT
Born in Louisville, Ga., April 26, 1826.
Major General.
Battles:  Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg(wounded), 
Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania,
Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.
Started the Augusta Chronical after the War.
Died:  Augusta, Ga., December 21, 1872.
